Sergeant McAffee’s Last Ride
by PD

Love the bow-tie!
Sergeant Mark McAffee of the California Highway Patrol has been a motorcycle officer most of his career. On Monday, after 26 years of service, “Mac” turned in his bike. He is now officially and utterly retired.
The drive into the Oakland CHP office is usually a rather dull 40 minute solo ride for McAffee. But not on his last day when he was surprised by his entire team, 11 motor officers, who rallied in Petaluma to escort him to work.
At 6-feet, 3-inches tall, McAffee looks a lot like the man on the Mr. Clean bottle. His nickname is “Leather” because he’s so tough.
Heck, he once hit a deer while on his bike and rode to a safe stop with the animal flailing atop his arms. He never took his hands off the handles.

He has a sweet side too. He’s been in the paper a few times, most notably for stopping traffic to escort a mamma duck and her ducklings across a busy roadway.
Good Deeds has it on good authority that McAffee’s last workday ride was uneventful except for one or two happy tears whipping into the wind.

Good Deeds. Good People. Good Causes. They are all around us. These acts are all pulled together in one place so we can pitch in, take part, or just take heart. Generosity happens every day — share what you see by sending your news to

Congratulations, Sergeant McAffee! What an inspirational ride that must have been from Petaluma to the office! Thank you, Press Democrat for spreading the news.

What an awesome article about an great guy (who just happens to be my husband). The community will sure miss his enthusiasm and dedication to the people of the Bay Area. He retires with positive experiences and best of all with great life-long friends.

We’re very proud of you here in Cincinnati, Mac! There’s no doubt you’ve touched lots of lives in many, many ways. Best wishes for your “Cincinnati family”!

Congratulations, Sergeant! Thanks for your service.

Best of luck Mac!! I have to agree with your wife when she refers to you as a “great guy”, thats an understatement. Having had the opportunity to work along side of you for many years with the Northbay Firefighters Burn Relay, you not only became a positive role model for these kids, you became someone I consider to be a great friend. I wish you and Vicki the very best in your retirement and hope that all of these good deeds you performed over the years are paid back in full for decades to come. You’ve earned it buddy!!

I remember back when Mark could hardly drive at all. He asked to borrow my then brand new Porsche 924 for his Senior Prom. I had reservations about it but his mother saved the day and everything worked out as he went to the prom … all the way to San Francisco and back IN STYLE. His mom, now departed, will be so proud and gleefully happy that he made it all the way to his retirement … still IN STYLE. Indeed, he worked with the greatest group of folks one could ever ask for … The CHP. Cheers, son, Dad.

Mac will be missed by the Fire Service of Sonoma County as he was our contact if we had any problems on any of ouur accidents. Best of luck with retirement and just maybe one day you will find the broken arrow incident you told me you had in Cloverdale. Maybe I’ll see on the road.

Congratulations Mark..wish we could attend your big blowout in September. I know you will be missed by your fellow officers. Yes, you look very intimadating if you were to get off that bike and walk over to the car, but you can see it you are a great “big teddy bear”!!!! I know Vicki and her family are very proud of you and we are too!! Now remember you’all have to come and visit your East Texas family!!!! However, wait until the “Fall” as our heat will blow your socks off. Congratulations to a sweet guy.
