Assist English learners

ADULT LITERACY LEAGUE

The Adult Literacy League of Sonoma County provides free one-on-one instruction in English as a Second Language to adults.

Volunteers, who must be 18, can enroll in a tutor training workshop in February. The fee is $55. Tutors meet with their student twice a week in a public place, such as the library.

The league provides ongoing support, including mentoring, and a lending library of tutoring resources. For information, call Bob Parsons at 539-3848 or e-mail literacy@sonic.net.

I volunteered for several years with the Adult Literacy League and found it very rewarding. No teaching experience is necessary – they teach you all you need to know in the training workshop. (Teaching one-on-one is much easier than teaching a class.) No knowledge of Spanish or other foreign language is necessary either.

If you’ve got the time, go for it!
